本文通过一个女性家奴的视角讲述了一个乱世豪门的兴衰史，作者通过自己扎实的文学功底，将苏家的背景、苏家各人物的性格交代的很详细，既有当权者的淫乱，又有小人物的鲜活表现，可以说比较完整且形象的描述了一个等级森严的传统家族的特色。
本文历史背景宏大，不管你苏家曾经多么显赫，张齐开、陈梦成自诩武力多么强大，面对历史的巨轮都成为尘土。反而普通小人物躲过了战争的劫难，过着自己得意的小日子。可见欲望越大，付出的越多，到头来很有可能一切皆成空。
