【影片簡介】：
本片根據米蘭·昆德拉的同名小說改編。1968年，布拉格外科手術醫生托馬斯（丹尼爾·戴-劉易斯 Daniel Day-Lewis 飾）生活在對女人追逐的快樂中，享受著性的快感。畫家薩比娜（莉娜·奧琳 Lena Olin 飾）是托馬斯的紅顔知己，但在一次去溫泉療養院出診的過程中，托馬斯結識了女招待特蕾莎（朱麗葉·比諾什Juliette Binoche 飾）。不久，特蕾莎只身來到布拉格，二人結婚。托馬斯在婚後依然不改與薩比娜或其他女人偷情的惡習，特蕾莎無法忍受托馬斯的不忠，深夜出走，卻碰上蘇聯武裝入侵捷克。三人先後逃亡至瑞士日內瓦，薩比娜認識了當地大學教授弗蘭茨（德雷克·德·林特 Derek de Lint 飾），特蕾莎失去工作終日悶悶不樂，帶著小狗卡列甯孤身重返布拉格。在自由與束縛之間，托馬斯究竟該如何選擇呢？
